This competition dealt with a catastrophic scenario in which most of New York City is destroyed by a natural disaster. Participants were asked to design a temporary housing solution for the displaced residents while taking into account factors such as timetables for assembly, cost, comfort, restricted availability of land and finally disassembly and recycling or reuse. Our proposal is based on the use of silos. Widely used for various types of storage, silos are readily available and already located throughout the country. The design we created uses the silo as small apartment buildings, housing a number of people on a small area. The versatility of this plan allows different solutions for different families and includes terraces and vegetation that not only contribute to the residents’ well-being but have a role in cleaning the air.
